Welcome to Obala

An enterprise and law-enforcement-grade research platform, built for professional analysts.

Obala AI gives your team a private AI research assistant for security, intelligence and investigative work. It combines purpose-built Obala models with document understanding, current-source web research and reusable knowledge, all in one Obala web application.

Private by design

Your account controls access to your chats, uploaded files and investigation results. Available processing and external research depend on the model and tools enabled for your account.

Research grade

The Obala Synapse model family covers both ends of the work: Obala Synapse 1.0 for in-depth research and reasoning, and Obala Synapse 1.0 Flash for fast, high-volume everyday analysis.

Built for evidence

Bring in reports, logs, spreadsheets, configuration and source code, then question them directly and keep each case organised in its own folder.

Obala responds in British English and is designed for professional users working on authorised engagements, from penetration testing and malware research to incident response, policy review and investigative analysis.

About Obala

Developed by ScaryByte. Created by Karim Jaber.

Obala is developed by ScaryByte to improve and enhance cybersecurity operations and allow law-enforcement agents to operate in-house technologies without the need to be technical.

Obala was created and developed by Karim Jaber, the CEO at ScaryByte. It is positioned as an enterprise and law-enforcement-grade research platform.

ScaryByte

The organisation behind Obala. Focused on practical cybersecurity capability for teams that need private, secure AI research tools.

Karim Jaber

CEO of ScaryByte and the creator of Obala. Product direction and platform design are driven from ScaryByte.

Obala identity

Each model identifies itself by name, Obala Synapse 1.0 or Obala Synapse 1.0 Flash, developed by ScaryByte.

What to expectWhen you ask who Obala is, who made it, or which model you are talking to, the reply names the Obala Synapse model you are using, ScaryByte and Karim Jaber.

Getting started

Sign in, check your model and ask your first question.

  1. Open Obala. Open chat.obala.ai, or the Obala cloud portal address provided by your administrator, in Firefox, Chrome or Edge.
  2. Sign in. Use the account your administrator has created for you. Self-registration is switched off, so contact your administrator if you need access or a password reset.
  3. Check your model. The model picker in the message box shows the Obala Synapse model that will answer, with your current selection shown by name. The picker lists only the models your administrator has enabled for you. See models.
  4. Start a chat. Type a question, pick one of the suggested starting points, or attach files with the + button in the message box.
Follow the workWatch the thinking, search and tool status while Obala works. A complex question or queued lookup can take longer than a short answer. A status update is progress, not the finished result. If a connection drops, use the existing chat and lookup reference to check what completed before starting the same work again.

Suggested starting points

The Synapse models offer starting points for common research tasks. Select one and replace any placeholder with your actual question or identifier.

Look up a CVE

Find the vulnerability, severity and relevant reference sources.

Map an ATT&CK technique

Review tactics, detections and mitigations.

OSINT an email or username

Investigate returned observations and their source context.

Review a rule or configuration

Identify concrete issues and explain suggested improvements.

For a larger case, ask for an investigation plan first. Managed reconnaissance and pentest execution are currently unavailable; discussion and analysis of research material remain separate from running tools.

Versions and improvementsObala Synapse improves through versioned releases. Changes are tested against the preceding release, with known limitations recorded. Your administrator may make a new version available to selected teams first; your existing chats and files carry over.

Thinking controls and answer room

ModelAvailable controlWhat to expect
Obala Synapse 1.0Reasoning effort: Low, High or Max. Default: Max.Higher effort can take longer. This model does not have a supported thinking-off mode.
Obala Synapse 1.0 FlashThinking: On or Off. Default: On.Flash does not use the flagship’s effort ladder. Thinking adds work and can increase response time.

Use the controls shown for the selected model. Thinking, reply length and available context are different settings. Long histories, files and tool results leave less room for a reply; check notices about reduced space or a cut-off answer. A thinking indicator does not promise an expandable transcript of internal reasoning.

In longer chats, Obala Synapse 1.0 and Obala Synapse 1.0 Flash can prepare a working summary of earlier conversation and tool evidence to leave room for the next answer. Your original messages and evidence remain saved, and Obala can retrieve exact earlier passages from the same conversation when needed. Preparing a continuation adds processing time; the chat shows its progress. A summary is a working aid and may not contain every detail, so ask for the original passage when exact wording matters. If a continuation cannot be prepared, Obala reports the problem and keeps the originals. Each request still has a context limit, and a single oversized message may need to be split. This feature continues the current conversation; it does not train the model or create memory across separate chats.

Where delegation is enabled, Obala can use sub-agents and wait for their returned work before combining an answer. This adds model calls and time; it does not expand the context available to each individual request. Background delegation is not currently enabled.

Who can see which modelsYour organisation’s administrator decides which Obala models each user or team can see and use. The model picker only lists the models enabled for your account; if you expect a model you cannot see, ask your administrator.

Working with files

Attach documents, scanned PDFs and screenshots to a chat and question them directly.

LimitValue
Maximum file size50 MiB per file
Files per message20
Text indexed from each fileUp to 2,000,000 extracted characters. Page count varies; the selected model’s context and retrieval determine how much is used in an answer.
Separate document toolsUp to 25 MiB per original for metadata inspection and PDF text/info extraction

Accepted formats

Obala accepts common office documents and a wide range of developer and infrastructure files. Upload via the + button in the message box, then check the upload and processing status before relying on the file in an answer. If the file exceeds a limit, uses an unsupported format or cannot be read, follow the reported error; a successful upload alone does not mean its text has been processed.

Legacy Office formats such as .doc or .ppt should be converted to .docx, .xlsx or .pptx first. Audio and video are not processed. The upload reader extracts text from supported screenshots and photos. Image features depend on the selected model; text recognition is not a guarantee that every visual detail is understood. Files without an extension (for example a bare Dockerfile or .env) should be renamed with a recognised extension before upload, such as Dockerfile.txt or app.env.

Two ways to organise material

Attach to a chat

Best for questions about specific documents. Up to 20 files per message, each up to 50 MiB. Answers that draw on your files cite them.

Folders

Group chats by case or project in the sidebar so related work stays together.

Scanned documents and screenshotsThe chat upload reader attempts text recognition on supported PDF images within a 40-page and 90-second budget, checked between pages. An individual page can take longer than 90 seconds; this is not a hard per-page timeout. Embedded text is still read on pages skipped for image recognition. Screenshots larger than 4,000 pixels on their longest side are reduced before recognition. Accuracy depends on image quality; the complete original remains available.
Reading completenessWhen the upload reader reaches a known OCR or text-indexing limit, its reading status identifies the partial result. The assistant receives that status alongside the available text, including when you use a knowledge collection. Check the original file for material outside the indexed or recognised text.

Knowledge and reusable material

Knowledge collections and notes are available where enabled for your account and selected model. Use a collection for reference material you want to revisit, with access controlled by its owner or administrator. Uploaded and indexed material can inform answers without training the model’s weights.

Document tools and investigation reports

Inspect an original file

Ask the enabled Documents tool to inspect metadata or extract PDF text and information from an original up to 25 MiB. This PDF extraction tool reads embedded text and does not run OCR. A mixed text/image PDF can return partial text while keeping the complete original and extracted output available.

Create an Obala report

Create a branded PDF from supplied content or a retained investigation result. Reporting from a retained result does not repeat the provider query. When publication is complete, the PDF is the primary report download, followed by the evidence ZIP when available. Supporting files, including original responses and report inputs, remain available separately; open them when you need the underlying evidence.

A large source may appear as a clearly labelled report overview with its full original embedded as a PDF attachment and included in the ZIP. The overview does not claim every field is printed. Chat summaries and bounded previews are separate from complete original downloads.

Waiting and downloadsQueued or running means processing has not finished. Partial, failed or interrupted work can still have useful outputs, clearly labelled with its actual state. Processing completion and download publication are separate: if downloads are pending, check the same operation’s status rather than starting the work again. Keep the operation ID or request reference. After a disconnect, use that reference to check the same operation and retrieve its published files. If submission was interrupted before any reference was returned, recovery may require support; avoid starting a duplicate request.
06

Chat features that help

Memory, web search, the Obala Security Reference, suggestions and model switching keep research moving.

Preferences and reusable context

Use your account settings for available personal preferences, and enabled knowledge collections for reference material. Memory features depend on the account and model; do not assume every statement in a chat has become a saved memory or trained the model.

Web search

For current information such as recent advisories, release notes or public reporting, ask Obala to search the web and cite its sources. Where available, the Web Search control in the chat input enables the selected search flow; enabled research tools may also search or fetch pages during a task. Availability depends on your account, model and enabled tools. Check the reported retrieval status and cited pages, and distinguish fresh retrieval from retained results.

Obala Security Reference

Both Synapse models can use the Obala Security Reference for topics such as CVEs, ATT&CK techniques, security controls and secure coding. Check the entries actually cited in the answer; a reference library is not a guarantee that every latest change is included. Ask for current web sources when freshness matters.

Suggestions and follow-ups

New chats offer starting prompts. After a reply, Obala can also suggest follow-up questions so you can dig deeper without starting from a blank page.

Switching models

Change between the Obala Synapse models enabled for you, for example Obala Synapse 1.0 Flash and Obala Synapse 1.0, at any time from the model picker. The conversation history stays, while the next answer uses the selected model’s capabilities and context limits. Check the selected tools and model after switching.

Folders and history

Organise chats into folders by engagement, case or team, search past conversations, and rename, export or delete chats when you no longer need them.

Concurrent workModels and tools can queue work when capacity is occupied. Keep the existing operation reference and watch its status; submitting the same request again can create additional work.
06a

Investigations from plan to report

Follow the same lookup through collection, retained evidence and reporting.

  1. Define the question. Provide the identifier and what you want to establish. Synapse and Flash can select an investigation method for a person, organisation, email, phone, username, domain, IP address, repository or file. A method guides the work; it does not itself run a lookup.
  2. Follow collection. Watch each source’s status. A queued or running source has not finished; a returned record does not prove every source succeeded. Keep the lookup reference.
  3. Check the same lookup. Ask “Check the status of this lookup and wait for the existing results.” Status reads retained state without placing a new provider query. Interrupted or uncertain work stays identified as such; it is not silently submitted again.
  4. Explore the full result. Open the results panel, expand records and nested fields, move through pages and use original downloads. Ask “Show more detail from this retained lookup” to inspect received data rather than repeat the lookup.
  5. Correlate with evidence. Compare dates, identifiers and source context. A shared name, old exposure or matching username is an observation, not proof of present ownership, identity or compromise. Ask the assistant to separate confirmed links from possibilities.
  6. Create a report. Choose Create PDF report in the results panel, or ask for an Obala PDF from that retained lookup. This snapshots the received evidence without rerunning the lookup. Wait for publication before downloading the report and originals.

Keep an investigation in a case

Open Investigations, choose New and record the case title and objective. Reopen an existing case to continue from its evidence, findings and open questions. In a chat with Obala Cases enabled, ask to bind that chat to the chosen case. Creating or binding a case is explicit; existing chats are not automatically turned into investigations.

  1. Bring in the evidence. Upload an original file or attach a retained lookup reference. Attaching or synchronising received lookup results reads existing evidence; it does not repeat a paid source query. A deliberately new lookup or continuation remains a separate action.
  2. Record what is established. Keep findings, observations and open questions distinct. Link a finding to its original artifact and exact source location. Original bytes, their hashes and derived material remain separately identifiable; an interpretation does not replace its source.
  3. Save a version. Use a case snapshot to record the evidence and findings used at that point. Open Versions and Open connections to inspect the retained relationships and their source references. The graph is read-only and shows bounded pages with explicit coverage.
  4. Export for the next step. The case evidence ZIP contains the saved originals and inventory. A PDF report is the readable report from a case snapshot; its supporting report bundle is a separate export. Read the snapshot and coverage details to know which evidence each export includes.
Continue the same reportKeep the saved report reference and use Resume report after a disconnect or reload. A PDF can be available while supporting-file publication is still pending. Partial work stays labelled partial; use the available files and check the same reference without submitting another report.

Images, text and location evidence

Obala Synapse 1.0 can inspect image content. Flash uses available extracted text and metadata rather than native image understanding. The case image workflow keeps the original, extracted metadata and recognised text separately, with references back to the image. Text extraction can miss small, rotated or unclear content; inspect the original and the reported processing state.

Recorded location metadata and a location inferred from visible clues are different findings. Missing GPS metadata does not establish where an image was taken. Treat an inferred place as a hypothesis until supported by source evidence; a recognised landmark does not establish an exact camera position or capture time.

Read usage without guessing the cost

Open Usage in the selected case for recorded activity and its coverage. Physical model or source invocations and historical aggregate records are shown separately; do not add both as if each represented a new request. Unknown usage or incomplete collection remains explicit.

AI usage is shown separately from HTC for OSINT and profiling and KICU for tools. 1 HTC = R1 and 1 KICU = R1. This conversion does not set how many units an operation consumes. Where rates, allowances or an amount due are not configured or known, the view says so rather than showing a zero price. An automatic-reload preference does not mean a reload payment has been executed.

Explore retained connections

Open Connections in the results panel to explore the same retained lookup as a graph or table. This view is read-only: selecting a node or connection shows its source reference and an Open original evidence link. It does not edit evidence or start another lookup.

Connections show source records and exact matching identifiers found in those records. A matching identifier or values appearing together are observations, not proof of identity, ownership or a real-world relationship. Pages show a bounded part of the graph; check the processed-record counts, source coverage and incomplete status before drawing conclusions. Use the original evidence links and downloads to inspect the full received values.

StateHow to use it
Queued / runningKeep waiting on the existing reference. Do not treat a progress message as a final finding.
CompletedRead the recorded source coverage and collected records. Completion does not mean every record on the internet was searched.
No resultsThe queried source returned no records for that request. This is not proof that the subject has no online presence or exposure.
Partial / unavailable / interruptedUse the evidence that was received and check the reason for missing coverage. Failed sources and unknown acceptance are not no-result findings.
Publication pendingProcessing has ended but downloads are not ready. Check the same report reference; do not start another report just to refresh its status.

Returned provider fields, unknown fields, nested values and duplicate observations remain available in the retained evidence. The chat answer is a summary, not the entire response. Source-imposed omissions, time limits or unavailable pages remain explicit; Obala does not invent the missing data.

Some source operations can finish later and offer updated retained results. Use Show updated results when offered. A deliberately new lookup or a different subject can consume a new provider query; changing the presentation of existing evidence should use the retained reference.

Large reportsA labelled overview can include complete originals as PDF attachments and in the evidence ZIP. Browser PDF viewers may not expose embedded attachments; download the separate original or ZIP when you need all bytes. A printed overview does not claim every original field is printed.

Connect your GitHub repositories

Read repository material with your own account’s access and a traceable revision.

  1. Open your GitHub tool settings. Find Obala GitHub in your available tools and open its personal settings. The current settings editor calls these Valves. If the tool is absent, ask your administrator to enable it for your account.
  2. Save your personal connection. Enter your own GitHub access token in access_token, set token_kind to pat for a personal access token, and save. Optionally set preferred_repo to owner/repository and preferred_ref to a branch, tag or commit. Use this settings field, not a chat message. The current token field is visible text.
  3. Check the connection. In a chat with the tool enabled, ask it to check your GitHub connection and list the repositories available to your account. Access follows your token’s actual repository permissions and any organisation approval.
  4. Choose a repository and revision. Ask for a file, directory, search, diff, history, issue or pull request. Keep the returned commit and source links when continuing a review. Large results may require another page or a file continuation.

Browser “Sign in with GitHub” onboarding is not currently available. Reconnect by updating your own token in the same settings. To disconnect Obala, clear that saved token and save; this does not revoke the token at GitHub.

Reading a repository does not execute its code or alter it. Supported write actions are separate requests and require the repository permissions for that action. If a token expires or access is removed, the connector reports the failure rather than using another user’s connection.

06c

Additional research sources

Choose a source, follow its lookup and keep the full returned evidence.

Where Obala Research is enabled, ask which sources and modes are available before starting. These sources extend the research toolkit; your existing OSINT tools and ordinary web search remain available separately.

Web search and page retrieval

Retrieve public pages and use the additional search route. Page retrieval passed the latest check on 23 October 2026. The additional search route reported an upstream availability error, so check its current status rather than assuming a search completed.

News and research archives

Search news, blogs, forums, cyber sources and breach records using the available modes. Time windows, remaining pages and indexing state affect coverage. Incomplete indexing is not a definitive no-result finding.

Domain and email research

Research domains, email observations and available person or company information. Discovery, enrichment and email verification are different modes; ask for the one that fits the question and inspect its returned evidence.

Phone network intelligence

Request available number-type, portability or network information. Read the returned status: an undetermined network result does not confirm that a number is connected.

  1. Check capabilities. Ask “Which Obala Research sources and modes can I use?” Availability and supported options can differ by source.
  2. Start the selected lookup. State the source, mode and subject. Keep the lookup reference returned in the chat. Watch the source’s status while collection runs.
  3. Follow the same work. Ask for the status of that lookup, including after reconnecting. A status check does not start a replacement lookup. If acceptance is uncertain, keep the reference and check the existing work rather than submitting it again.
  4. Read or continue deliberately. “Show more retained detail” reads data already received. “Continue this lookup for more source pages” makes additional provider requests when a continuation is available. Further pages can consume supplier usage; a page limit reached with more results remains partial.
  5. Create the PDF. Open the results panel and choose Create PDF report, or ask for a report from that retained lookup. Wait for file publication, then download the PDF and available originals or evidence ZIP. This uses the saved evidence without repeating the source query.
Read the coverage, not just the answerChat summaries and panel previews are shorter views of retained results. Expand fields and use downloads for full received research data. A valid empty result, an unavailable source, partial coverage and an uncertain submission mean different things. Uncertain work is not automatically resubmitted. See the investigation states and document and large-report guidance.
07

Good practice

Clear questions, traceable sources and useful follow-ups.

Check the evidence

Keep observations, interpretation and unanswered questions separate. Ask for the source and date behind a claim, then compare the original when the conclusion matters.

  • Use current search for facts that can change; distinguish fresh retrieval from retained evidence.
  • Read source coverage and errors before treating a result as complete.
  • Report mismatches with the lookup reference so the same evidence can be checked.

Clear prompts

  • State the goal, the environment and any constraints (for example “defensive only” or “report style for a client”).
  • Attach the relevant files rather than pasting large dumps into the message box.
  • Ask for structured output when you need it: tables, checklists, command sequences or report sections.

Keep a case organised

  • Keep related chats and files in the same case folder.
  • Retain the original document alongside any extracted text or report.
  • Keep lookup and report references when work is pending or interrupted.
  • Use the connection settings for tokens and tool access; they are separate from investigation material.
What Obala does not doUploading files does not retrain the model, and this document workflow does not process audio or video. The upload reader extracts text from supported screenshots and scanned pages; separate image features depend on the selected model. Attached files, enabled knowledge collections and memories can supply context without retraining the model. Enabled search and page-fetch tools can contact external sources during a task; their status and sources distinguish retrieved information from stored material.

How to register

  1. Get in touch. Email support@scarybyte.co.za with your organisation’s name, the plan you want and the number of seats.
  2. Confirm your seats. We confirm availability, the plan and the terms for your organisation.
  3. Start working. Your administrator receives access, creates accounts for your team and assigns each user to their plan. See getting started.

Plans and model visibility

Each user is assigned to one plan by your administrator, and every plan includes the Obala Synapse models. Your administrator also decides which models each user or team can see, so a new Obala Synapse version can be made available to selected teams first. Moving a user to a different plan changes their monthly price from the next billing month.

Pricing in randPrices are shown in South African rand (ZAR), based on US dollar list prices at approximately R16.48 to the US dollar (October 2026). Prices exclude VAT. Seats are allocated in order of registration and confirmed for your organisation before access starts.
Capacity managed for qualityBoth plans use the same full-quality Obala Synapse models; plans differ in capacity, administration and support, never in response quality. Obala Cloud capacity is sized for the seats on each plan. We limit the number of seats rather than reduce quality, and we add capacity before taking on more users.
